What Are Dental Veneers?
Veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment that covers one or more of your front teeth. Typically made of a thin, natural-looking shell of porcelain or composite resin, they are designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.
Dental veneers can be applied to one or several teeth to:
- Correct gaps between the teeth
- Change irregular tooth shape, length, and size
- Restore chipped or pitted teeth
- Correct slightly misaligned or crooked teeth
- Cover discoloration and staining
Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are the most durable and aesthetically-pleasing type of veneer. The color, shape, fit, and size of ceramic veneers are fully customized. They are created in a dental lab and are made with thin layers of porcelain that mimic the look of natural enamel. Strong and resistant to staining, porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years or more.
Composite Veneers
This type of veneer is made of a composite resin material in-office or in a dental lab. They are also fully customized and alter the appearance of the teeth. Although composite veneers are more affordable than porcelain and can be an effective solution for cosmetic enhancements, they are more susceptible to staining and don’t last as long as porcelain.
Some dental practices offer prefabricated resin veneers, but our dentists do not recommend them because they don’t provide the appearance, quality, or durability of custom porcelain and composite veneers.
Dental Veneer Procedure
Veneers usually require a couple of trips to the dentist. To determine whether veneers are right for you, your dentist will do a thorough examination of your teeth and mouth, take x-rays if necessary, discuss your smile makeover goals, and create a personalized treatment plan.
Before starting the procedure, we determine which shade of porcelain or composite best matches your other teeth. To prepare a tooth for veneers, the area is numbed with a local anesthetic if needed, and a small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth.
Once the teeth are prepared, precise impressions are taken. A professional lab technician uses these impressions to create custom-crafted veneers that fit perfectly and look like natural teeth. Your dentist places temporary veneers to protect your teeth while your permanent veneers are being prepared.
When they return from the lab in about two weeks, your permanent dental veneers are placed. Before bonding permanent veneers, your dentist positions them on your teeth to ensure a proper fit and color. They may be trimmed or adjusted as needed. Your natural teeth are cleaned, polished, and etched, which roughens the tooth’s surface to facilitate proper adhesion of the veneers. They are then permanently cemented to your teeth. Your dentist will remove any excess cement, and final adjustments will be made to make sure your bite is comfortable and properly aligned.
Caring For Dental Veneers
Both porcelain and composite veneers are made of strong materials, but they can chip or break. Avoid chewing your fingernails and crunching hard materials like ice, hard candies, or pens. Some other things you can do to keep your veneers in good shape include:
- Practicing an effective oral hygiene routine that includes brushing twice a day, using an antiseptic mouthwash, and daily flossing
- Visiting your dentist every six months for dental cleanings and checkups
- Wearing an occlusal guard if you grind or clench your teeth at night
- Protecting your teeth by wearing a custom sports guard when you play sports
- Avoiding tobacco use and limiting foods that cause discoloration, such as coffee, red wine, soft drinks, tea, soy sauce, and berries
Dental veneers are just one treatment option for enhancing and maintaining a beautiful smile. Our team is happy to answer any questions about veneers and the other services we offer.
